Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF)
Energy-saving Device Contributing to a Cleaner Environment
PBCF is an energy-saving device installed on the hub of a vessel’s propeller. It improves propeller efficiency by weakening the hub vortex generated behind the rotating propeller and reduces fuel consumption by up to 5%. On a large containership, for example, that adds up to a 9,000-ton reduction in annual CO2 emissions.
PBCF was co-developed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd., West Japan Fluid Engineering Laboratory Co., Ltd., and Mikado Propeller Co., Ltd. PBCF has been recognized all over the world since 1987 when its sales began and has been installed on more than 3,500 vessels as of Jan 2020. Thanks to its environmental performance and the great support from our reliable customers, PBCF has established outstanding sales and a leading position as a long-term bestseller as an energy-saving device in the maritime industry.
In addition, PBCF reduces underwater noise in a specific frequency range by 3 to 6 decibels confirmed by a model test. Thereby, it was selected as a vessel noise reduction technology in the “EcoAction Program” implemented by the Port of Vancouver, Canada, aimed at protecting whales and other marine mammals from the underwater noise. As a result, PBCF now attracts public attention not only for energy-saving but also for environmental conservation.
